HSK 7–9: The Advanced HSK 3.0 Band

HSK 7–9 is the advanced band of HSK 3.0. Levels 7, 8 and 9 form one band, with an official list of 11,000 words, 3,088 characters to read and 593 grammar points. Level 9 is the highest HSK level.

Are HSK 7, HSK 8 and HSK 9 separate levels?

In HSK 3.0, levels 7, 8 and 9 form one advanced band. The official syllabus lists them together, with one word list for the whole band.

One official band, three story tracks. Mythic Mandarin splits its advanced stories into Level 7, Level 8 and Level 9 tracks to make the progression easier. The tracks are our learning steps, not separate official exams.

What is the highest HSK level?

Level 9 is the highest of the nine HSK 3.0 levels. It belongs to the advanced HSK 7–9 band.

HSK 7–9 compared with HSK 6

From HSK 6 to the advanced band, the word list grows from 5,400 to 11,000 words, characters to read from 1,940 to 3,088, and grammar points from 459 to 593.

Advanced stage (levels 7–9, one band)

HSK 7–9 is the advanced band of HSK 3.0: one official band covering levels 7, 8 and 9. Here you read the Chinese that educated native speakers read: essays, reports, literature and texts with classical echoes. Mythic Mandarin splits the band into three story tracks, Level 7, 8 and 9, as learning steps; they are not separate official exams.

Goal: In the advanced band you work towards reading complex texts on specialist and cultural topics, recognising classical structures in modern writing, and writing well-organised formal Chinese.

What you will learn

  • Classical structures alive in modern writing: 以……为……, 之所以……是因为……
  • Formal connectives: 鉴于, 从而, 然而
  • Switching between spoken and written register on purpose
  • Fixed four-character expressions beyond chengyu
  • Following and building an argument across paragraphs

Characters: the less common thousand

The advanced band adds many characters that are rare in speech but frequent in writing. The characters below are a Mythic Mandarin practice selection, not an official HSK list.

Review Reading unfamiliar characters in context

At this level you meet characters you have never seen. Combine three clues: the meaning part, the sound part and the sentence. Then confirm in the dictionary rather than guessing the pronunciation.

  • 阐述

    chǎnshù

    to expound

阐 has 门 (door) around 单 dān: the sound part only hints at chǎn.

Read the guide: Chinese Characters vs Words

Optional practice. Watch the strokes, then trace the character; each finished trace counts as one repetition, up to 20. Progress is saved on this device only, and nothing here is needed to continue.

Grammar: formal and classical patterns

Advanced grammar is less about new rules and more about register, precision and the classical layer of written Chinese.

New Classical structures in modern writing

Formal Chinese keeps patterns from the classical language. 以 A 为 B means "take A as B"; 之所以……是因为…… means "the reason why … is that …".

  • 这所学校以学生为中心。

Zhè suǒ xuéxiào yǐ xuésheng wéi zhōngxīn.

This school puts students at the centre.

  • 之所以选择这里,是因为交通方便。

Zhī suǒyǐ xuǎnzé zhèlǐ, shì yīnwèi jiāotōng fāngbiàn.

The reason we chose this place is that it is easy to get to.

New Formal connectives: 鉴于, 从而, 然而

Reports and essays link ideas with connectives rarely heard in conversation. 鉴于 gives the grounds, 从而 the consequence, 然而 the contrast.

  • 鉴于目前的情况,会议推迟举行。

Jiànyú mùqián de qíngkuàng, huìyì tuīchí jǔxíng.

In view of the current situation, the meeting has been postponed.

  • 他改进了方法,从而提高了效率。

Tā gǎijìnle fāngfǎ, cóng'ér tígāole xiàolǜ.

He improved the method and thereby raised efficiency.

New Choosing the register on purpose

Advanced learners choose between spoken and written words deliberately: 但是 in conversation, 然而 in an essay; 很 in speech, 十分 or 颇为 on paper.

  • 计划很好,然而执行起来并不容易。

Jìhuà hěn hǎo, rán'ér zhíxíng qǐlai bìng bù róngyì.

The plan is good; carrying it out, however, is far from easy.

New Fixed four-character expressions

Beyond chengyu with a story behind them, formal Chinese uses many fixed four-character phrases as ready-made building blocks.

  • 毫无疑问,这是一个重要的发现。

Háo wú yíwèn, zhè shì yí ge zhòngyào de fāxiàn.

Without a doubt, this is an important discovery.

Review Chengyu in argument

In essays chengyu summarise a point in four characters. Use them precisely: each has a fixed meaning and tone.

  • 这种做法无异于画蛇添足。

Zhè zhǒng zuòfǎ wúyìyú huà shé tiān zú.

This approach amounts to spoiling things by overdoing them.

Review Written register across a whole text

Keep one register through a text: mixing very casual words into a formal report sounds careless.

  • 该研究表明,睡眠对记忆有显著影响。

Gāi yánjiū biǎomíng, shuìmián duì jìyì yǒu xiǎnzhù yǐngxiǎng.

The study shows that sleep has a marked effect on memory.

Practise Rhetorical questions in essays

Rhetorical questions add force to an argument; 岂不是 is a formal relative of 难道.

  • 如果放弃,岂不是前功尽弃?

Rúguǒ fàngqì, qǐ bú shì qiángōngjìnqì?

If we give up now, wouldn't all our earlier effort be wasted?

Review: are you reading like a native?

Advanced progress is gradual. Use these as a checklist for the band as a whole.

  • I can recognise 以……为…… and 之所以……是因为…… in a text.
  • I can link formal paragraphs with 鉴于, 从而 and 然而.
  • I keep one register through a piece of writing.
  • I can use fixed four-character expressions accurately.
  • I can follow a rhetorical question to the writer's real point.

The band has no level after it: keep reading. The Level 7, 8 and 9 story tracks and the dictionary are the best companions for the long road through the advanced band.
